SALLY E. DEAN - ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY
SALLY E DEAN is a London-based American performer, choreographer, playwright and teacher. Her work has been performed in New York (NY Musical Theater Festival), London, Java, Prague, Essen, San Francisco, and Seattle. She is the founding director of her own performing arts company (www.sallyedean.com), and the Kolaborasi Project (www.kolaborasi.org), whose mission is to bring American, British and South-East Asian artists together to collaborate and produce innovative performance works internationally.
Sally Dean has recently returned after 18 months of living, creating, performing, collaborating, teaching and researching in Solo, Java as a recipient of a Darmasiswa Scholarship from the Indonesian government. Recent events include curating and performing in Excerpts from Above and Beyond (July 2007), at Solo's main theatre complex (Taman Budaya Jawa Tengah) which included a dance/theatre workshop and a collaborative performance with Indonesian artists; Bedhog Arts Night (Aug. 2007), a 3 day workshop and collaborative site specific performance with Indonesian choreographer Miroto Martinus and Cambodian dancers Sodhachivy and Sopheap in Yogaskarta; and intensively studying Amerta Movement (2007-2008) created by Javanese teacher and performer Suprapto Suryodarmo, whom she curated two London workshops for as well as a presentation of his work at the Indonesian Embassy in London (Nov. 2006 & 2007). She also co-curated and performed in “Kemanapun,” an international collaboration amongst seven women in July 2008 in Yogyaskarta (www.kemanasaja.com).
In Britain, Sally continues her three year ongoing site-specific collaboration of “Duets for Objects;” devised and performed with British dancer/visual artist Florence Peake - a process originally funded by the 2006 Chisenhale Artist's Research Grant. Performances include traditional theatre spaces such as The Place, Robert Howard Dance Theatre to London's historic crypt space in Spitalfields Christ Church and Coventry Cathedral sponsored by Coventry University as part of their Summer Dancing Festival (June 2008).
Sally has taught dance and theatre at some of Britain's and Indonesia's leading universities such as; The Laban Centre (2005-2006); Central School of Speech and Drama (2006-2007); Chichester University (2004-2006); and ISI (Institut Seni Indonesia), the national arts university in Surakarta, Java.
Sally has facilitated creative processes and artists' forums both in educational and professional settings, including London's Independent Dance Feedback Forum, the Choreographer's Circle, and The Field. She currently is teaching two ongoing independent workshops for professional artists: Performance Making and Training for the Contemporary Performer in London.
Sally holds a MA by project in Art, Design and Visual Culture from London Metropolitan University, based on cross-disciplinary, practice-based research into subjective and objective perspectives on the performance making process. She holds a BA in Choreography/Playwriting from Bennington College and in Theatre/Psychology from College of the Holy Cross in the USA. She is a certified teacher of Skinner Releasing Technique, an influential and innovative somatic approach to movement training.
