#1 SKINNER RELEASING AND THE ART OF PERFORMANCE
Workshops led by Alex Crowe and Sally Dean

Two long-weekend intensive workshops in movement and the art of performance based on Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT), a gentle but powerful system of movement training involving touch, sound and visualised imagery.  Beginning from classes in SRT, we explore key aspects of the technique as ways into performance and performance making, extending them to encompass costume, object and site - enriching and supporting our practice of SRT.  The SRT classes may also be taken on their own.

First Workshop:  Opening Inwards - Touch, Sound and Image

#2 PERFORMANCE MAKING WORKSHOPS (2010)
facilitated by Sally E. Dean (info@sallyedean.com)

photo and performance credit: Laura Adamson

A series of workshops in three parts each focusing on a different stage in the process of creating interdisciplinary performance work:  GENERATE, DEVELOP, and EDIT & REFINE.  Together, they aim to support you as a creative artist to generate strong, clear material which embodies and develops your own personal ideas, vision and aesthetic - in both solo and group pieces.  They provide a space to take creative risks and experiment with new approaches and compositional techniques, whether you are new to performance making or looking to refresh and challenge your existing practice.  Constructive feedback will be available throughout, both one-to-one from the facilitator, and from other participants, facilitated using established methodologies such as The Field in New York and Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process.  At the end of the series, there will be an opportunity for participants to show what they have made in a performance event with invited audience.

Each workshop builds on the previous one.  Anyone who would like to join the series after the first workshop should contact Sally to discuss whether they have compositional material that meets the workshop's stage of development.

GENERATE
March 13, 14, 20 & 21
Saturdays and Sundays
10.30 – 16.30
£165*
Venue: London Buddhist Arts Centre, Eastbourne House, London, E2
(max 9 participants)

Part One, GENERATE, provides a set of practical tools for generating original material and/or turning existing ideas you may bring with you into performance material.  It begins by cultivating a sense of play, freedom and spontaneity, and then looks at a variety of starting points for creating material, such as objects, images, texts, movement and costumes.  An important aspect is how to create and actualise ideas with others, taking on the roles of collaborator and director.

DEVELOP
March 30 - May 18
Tuesdays, 18:30 - 21:00 for 8 weeks
and 2 individual one-to-one sessions
£155
Venue: Hanbury Space, 22A Hanbury St., Spitalfields, London E1

EDIT & REFINE
May 21 & 23
Friday, 18:30 - 21:30
Sunday, 12:00 - 21:30
Sunday Performance, 19:00
£90
Venue: Hanbury Space, 22A Hanbury St., Spitalfields, London E1

These workshops are for participants who have participated in the first workshops of the series, GENERATE 1 & 2, or for those who are already developing specific material.

Part Two, DEVELOP, provides a set of practical tools for building on previously generated material.  It helps you identify key focuses for your material (e.g. theme, question, concept) and offers ways to structure your material around your chosen focuses in either linear and non-linear ways. At the same time it supports you to refine the details of your piece.  The overarching approach is to help you find an ongoing dialogue between your own subjective experiences and interests in the material, and an objective view of how it is likely to be seen and received by an audience.

Part Three, EDIT & REFINE focuses on developing material into a completed performance work through techniques that trim and fine tune detail to bring out the work's essence.

*£45 discount if all three workshops are booked

**Each workshop can be taken on its own, but participants in each workshop will receive a discount on the subsequent ones in the series.

*** One-on-one Artistic Feedback and Mentoring Sessions are also available.  Please contact Sally for additional info.

#3 2010 TRAINING FOR THE CONTEMPORARY PERFORMER

8 WEEK COURSE
Starting February 2010, weekday evenings for 2 hours.
Venue: TBD
£96 or £80 concessions (student or unemployed)
max 12 participants
reserve your space: info@sallyedean.com

These interdisciplinary workshops offer an eclectic range of techniques from somatic-based movement practices and contemporary theatre forms, aiming to equip dancers, actors, and live artists of all backgrounds with the versatility often needed in contemporary performance practice.

Starting from internal physical awareness practices and a sense of dynamic play in an environment that encourages creative risk, we will use improvisational structures to train body and voice, awaken sensitivity to dramatic space and explore a variety of forms of presence.  This liveness will be used in abstract forms, visual images, and live improvised text and movement scores.

BOOKING AND FURTHER INFORMATION
