The Waitress

Created and performed by: Sally Dean

Through movement, song, and spoken word, this theatre/dance piece brings to life the character of a waitress, and her adventures in an imaginary, fast-paced, restaurant world. The waitress struggles to maintain a physical and mental balance throughout the piece. As she continues to serve and please clients, beg for tips, take orders, fight internal and external obstacles such as food, people, forgetfulness, exhaustion, and money, this piece becomes more frenetic and absurd. Even during moments of attempted sleep, the movement, words, and life of the restaurant invade the waitress’s dreams. The piece ends as if begins: a waitress running on her toes, balancing imaginary plates of food on her hands, dodging other waiters and waitresses, and stopping for brief moments to smile.
